Stupid Foreigners

Originally a blog for my 'bewildering' experiences as an international, it has since evolved into... something else. Though not entirely. The point is, when I say 'stupid foreigner', I only sometimes mean myself.

For the curious: left home (Philippines) for two and a half years in Italia (there was a time when I snobbily thought I was abbastanza Milanese); then went on to college in the grand ole US of A (East Coast). Currently I go back and forth between Rhode Island and Manila.

Conversations I've witnessed and experienced.

White person: Makes x statement.
Non-white person: Here is a factually-based reason why x offends me.
White person: You're being sensitive. You shouldn't be offended because of y and z.
Non-white person: Here is a factually-based, and very politely-worded reason why y and z have created the conditions that x is offensive to me.
White person: I insist that you stop overreacting. It's always been like this, that's life.
Non-white person: "This" is my life and my reality.
